Through biomedical research and science education, Van Andel Institute is committed to improving the health and enhancing the lives of current and future generations. Van Andel Research Institute (VARI), VAI’s research arm, is dedicated to studying the genetic, cellular and molecular origins of cancer, Parkinson’s and other diseases and working to translate those findings into effective therapies. This is accomplished through the work of more than 200 researchers in on-site laboratories and in collaborative partnerships that span the globe. Van Andel Education Institute (VAEI), VAI’s education arm, is dedicated to strengthening science education and preparing and motivating individuals to pursue science-related professions through programs that provide handson, inquiry-based learning opportunities across the entire educational spectrum. Purple Community – 100% Hope ® is Van Andel Institute’s grassroots initiative to empower supporters in businesses, communities, schools and other organizations to increase awareness, celebrate survivors, honor loved ones and raise funds for disease research and science education. A Letter from David Van Andel Chairman & CEO Van Andel Institute As we enter the fall season and approach the holidays, we often take time to reflect on the experiences and accomplishments of the previous year. It has been a year of forward momentum and growth at the Institute, and I have never felt more confident in our mission and our ability to have a positive impact on human health. I am proud to say that in 2013 we took our mission across the country and met with philanthropists, business leaders and research peers in places like Menlo Park, Santa Barbara and Chicago. We brought key members of our research and development departments and crafted presentations that would help people better understand who we are and what we do. In every instance, we were able to foster new partnerships and connect with people who are passionate about our initiatives and our ability to change the course of biomedical research and science education. We connected with new friends and supporters, and increased our national footprint. During these meetings, I had the privilege to listen to members of our staff discuss their work in great detail. I was struck by the passion and commitment of the research and education staff we have at the Institute. Some of these individuals have come to Van Andel Institute because they desire to make a lasting contribution to biomedical research, and others wish to make a significant impact on the future of science education. David Van Andel We now have researchers and educators from nearly two dozen nations helping to push the boundaries of knowledge and scientific discovery. By many measures, this year has been a successful one for the Institute, but true success for me is measured by the impact you are having on those you desire to help. This year we’ve made strides in cancer research, continued to build on our commitment to take on neurodegenerative diseases like Parkinson’s and diversified and strengthened our education programing. The Institute is now the headquarters of a worldwide research network with collaborations in countries that span the globe. Locally, we continue to grow Purple Community into a powerful, statewide, community engagement program. We have also added to our list of corporate partnerships, and are working with the Detroit Red Wings to present the Hockey Fights Cancer Night presented by Van Andel Institute-Purple Community on October 26, 2013 at Joe Louis Arena. Our growth and ability to impact others is directly connected to your support. Your action on behalf of the work we do is something that I, and everyone at Van Andel Institute, value beyond measure. Please know how grateful we are to have you as partners as we work to change the course of discovery. When we founded the Institute in 1996, we knew we wanted to attract the best talent from around the world and create a mecca of intellectual capital that would be at the forefront of research and science education.
